Rock, Performer, Guitar, Singer, Bass, Percussion Lenny Kravitz (born May 26th, 1964 in New York) is a rock star whose retro-style amalgam of Rock, Pop, Funk, and even Techno is inspired by such music icons as Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon. The son of Jewish Hollywood producer Sy Kravitz and Bahamian actress Roxie Roker (of The Jeffersons), Lenny grew up in wealth. Having taught himself bass, piano, guitar, and drums at an early age and developed his singing voice in the California Boys Choir and the Metropolian Opera, he attended Beverly Hills High School and performed under the artist name, Romeo Blue. His 1989 debut album Let Love Rule was an immediate success. He gained even greater recognition with Madonna covering his song, "Justify My Love". His next album, Mama Said contained the hit single "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" that reached #2 on the charts. In 1993, Are You Gonna Go My Way was published, to be followed by Circus (1995) and then 5 (1998), embracing digital technology for the first time. 5 introduced Kravitz's music to an even wider audience, particularly in Europe, because "Fly Away" had been featured prominently in both car manufacturer and airline commercials. His latest albums as of 2002 are Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits and Lenny. Lenny's songs frequently revolve around personal experiences, such as the death of his mother and the often difficult relationship with his spouse, Lisa Bonet. However, most of his songs are rather uplifting and life-affirming in nature. …………………. Blessed--or cursed--by his relative youth, Lenny Kravitz (b. circa 1965, Brooklyn, New York) has built a growing audience in the '90s by playing music that draws conspicuous inspiration from such '60s figures as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Curtis Mayfield, and Sly & the Family Stone. What seems to gall his many critics most? That he actually dresses the part. With his bellbottom pants, his boots, and his necklaces and medallions, he could be an extra from the cast of Hair, were it not for the telling modern touches of dreadlocks and a nose ring. Kravitz's affection for the '60s runs much deeper than mere matters of his appearance, or even his songwriting; deeply involved in the production of his own albums, he is, for instance, militantly in favor of analog recording methods that use tubes rather than transistors. Referring to his unique studio approach, Kravitz noted with some pride in 1992, "Now when people try for that sound, they feel that all you have to do is turn the reverb off. They don't understand the whole process--going from the microphone to the amplifiers to compressors into EQ units that have tubes and back to the tape machine. It's a lost art." The art that Kravitz has not only found but displayed with love on all his albums has won him a large international audience, and with 1992's Are You Gonna Go My Way?, taken him to platinum sales levels. The Brooklyn-born son of Jeffersons actress Roxsie Roker and NBC-TV producer Sy Kravitz, Kravitz grew up on New York's Upper East Side, immersed in the music of Bobby Short, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. At one point in his childhood, he's said, he sat on Duke Ellington's lap as the master jazz composer played the piano. After his mother moved to Los Angeles for her Jeffersons role, Kravitz spent three years with the California Boys Chorale, with whom he participated in conductor Zubin Mehta's recording of Mahler's Third Symphony. Attending Beverly Hills High School, where he would meet future Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash--who would later guest on Kravitz's albums--the singer led what was by no means a "normal" childhood. Or adulthood: Even before signing his deal, Kravitz was nationally known due to his marriage with actress Lisa Bonet of The Cosby Show. Though they have since divorced, Kravitz dedicated his 1991 breakthrough album Mama Said to the actress. Kravitz met his longtime musical partner Henry Hirsch in the early '80s; Hirsch, who ran a New Jersey recording studio, shared Kravitz's interest in pre-digital technology. Kravitz's talents as musician and producer have been heavily in demand since 1989's Let Love Rule. His productions have included part of the Superfly II soundtrack, Madonna's "Justify My Love" (for which has partial composing credit), and an album with French singer Vanessa Paradis. In 1993, he duetted with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones singer's 1993 version of Bill Withers' "Use Me," and co-wrote a track on Aerosmith's platinum-plus Get A Grip album. As derivative as his own music may sometimes be, Lenny Kravitz is a unique figure, and his albums are aural treats. Though his critics may scoff at his seeming deliberately retro look, it has very much worked to his benefit in the modern MTV era. "If you really listen to my records," Kravitz told writer Steve Hochman in late 1993, "there's elements of folk, elements of gospel...lots of R&B, lots of soul, jazz, classical with my arrangements, reggae. I'm really covering a lot of ground. [Speaking of which, Kravitz's latest album 5 even covers electronica.] But because of the clothes and things, it all gets clumped up." L’album, che all’inizio doveva chiamarsi Eleutheria, perchй Eleuth nella lingua delle Bahamas significa libertа и stato quello che ha ricevuto maggiori consensi rispetto a quelli precedenti, guadagnando un Brit Award nel 1994 come miglior album, e il BMI Pop Award come migliore canzone nel 1995; inoltre il video che accompagna l’omonima canzone ha vinto nel 1993 l’MTV Video Music Award come miglior video di un artista maschile. L’album rappresenta l’esempio di tutti i vari generi musicali che influenzano la sua musica e dei suoi differenti gusti musicali: il rock, il funk, il soul e perfino il gospel. In generale и un album piщ coerente rispetto a quelli precedenti. Alcune tappe importanti della storia di Lenny Kravitz passano attraverso illustri collaborazioni. Nell’aprile del 1994 Kravitz registra uno show Unplugged per Mtv. Tra il ’94 e il ’95 Kravitz lavora al suo quarto album, il caleidoscopico CIRCUS, che esce nel febbraio del 1995. CIRCUS и un album che, mentre da una parte si presenta come la critica verso il modo di vivere dell’ambiente rock, con cui egli ha a che fare e che trova incredibilmente povero dal punto di vista spirituale, dall’altra и una evidente e manifesta dichiarazione della fede in Dio. Non manca infatti di parlare piщ volte di Dio e del figlio di Dio che muore e risorge per l’uomo: "God is love", "The resurrection", "In my life", "Today" sono le canzoni piщ significative al riguardo. Recentemente Lenny si и anche fatto tatuare sulla schiena la scritta: "My hearts belongs to Jesus Christ" che significa "il mio cuore appartiene a Gesщ Cristo". Sono parte del Circo il matrimonio fallito con l’attrice Lisa Bonet e la morte della madre, a causa di un cancro, avvenuta nel dicembre 1995. Passano due anni prima dell’uscita di 5, che esce dioi 8 mesi di lavorazione. Per questo lavoro, infatti, ha deciso di abbracciare la tecnologia piщ avanzata, incorporando campionamenti e loop di sua creazione nel suo inconfondibile stile di registrazione che genera suoni grezzi e spontanei: ne и risultato il lavoro piщ deciso e completo della sua produzione. C’и da dire che in 5 ci sono le influenze degli ultimi due duri anni della vita personale di Kravitz, segnati in particolare modo dalla perdita della madre. Il toccante brano "Thinking of you" и dedicato a lei, ed и una delle sue canzoni piщ belle. Da un’altra esperienza, quella di genitore, sprigionano le emozioni, la rinnovata energia e la grazia di "Little girl’s eyes", Zoe ha ricevuto infatti nell’album 5 un tributo personale con questo brano che Lenny le ha regalato per il suo compleanno. Nella canzone "I belong to you" troviamo esemplificato alla perfezione il Kravitz piщ melodico; E’ in occasione del video di questa canzone che Lenny si taglia la sua leggendaria chioma. Il singolo "Fly away" и arrivato in testa alle tre classifiche di Billboard, rispettivamente: Modern Rock Tracks, Active Rock Tracks e Mainstream Rock Tracks. E’ la prima volta che un artista ha scalato queste tre classifiche tutte in una settimana. In piщ 5 ha vinto nel febbraio 1999 il Grammy Award per la migliore performance rock maschile. Il 23 aprile 1999 Lenny и partito per un lungo tour estivo iniziato in California e conclusosi in Germania. Dal 1994, anno in cui entra ufficialmente a far parte della band la travolgente batterista Cindy Blackman, i membri del gruppo che suonano nei toru mondiali con Lenny Kravitz e che, in alcuni pezzi, hanno suonato anche nell’ultimo album sono: Craig Ross (chitarra), Jack Daley (basso), George Laks (tastiere), Michael Hunter (tromba e percussioni), Harold Todd (sassofono, flauto traverso, percussioni), Nemiah Hield (vocalist). Memorabili sono le sue performance dal vivo in cui non perde mai l’occasione di predicare l’amore e l’unitа fra le genti. Ultimamente Kravitz и stato chiamato da Elton John per interpretare "Like father like son", una delle canzoni che fanno parte di Aida, il nuovo musical teatrale che ha scritto assieme a Tim Rice per la Disney. Per la colonna sonora del film Austin Powers: the spy who shagged me, Lenny ha registrato un’incandescente versione dello storico pezzo dei Guess Who, "American Woman" Nel 2000 lancia la sua prima compilation "Greatest Hits" tra i vari successi ne spicca uno molto recente "Again". Uscito prima come singolo e poi con un video molto azzeccato, Again, e' diventata in poco tempo tra le canzoni piu' passate in radio e Lenny Kravitz allarga la sua popolarita'. Nel 2001 dopo una grande attesa esce il suo sesto album indedito "Lenny", preceduto dal singolo "Dig In". Sempre nel 2001 scrive una delle piu' belle canzoni rock " God Gave Me Everything" purtroppo la scrive per quel vecchio peto (definizione Oasis) di Mick Jagger. Non ci rimane che la speranza di sentirla con la voce di Lenny Kravitz magari nel prossimo tour italiano |
